My Favorite Products to Keep Your Passport Safe While Traveling

When you’re traveling internationally, your passport is your single most important document. In countries like Japan, you’re legally required to carry it at all times. And in many other destinations, you’ll need it to check into hotels, rent cars, or confirm your identity.

But here’s the challenge: passports are also a top target for pickpockets and thieves. So how do you follow the rules andkeep your passport safe? Over years of family travel, I’ve tested different approaches, and these are my favorite products that actually make carrying a passport stress-free.

1. Travel Pants With a Hidden Zipper Pocket

I love my Merino Travel Pants! They’re stylish enough for city exploring, somehow stay completely stink free, comfortable enough for long flights, and—best of all—have a hidden zipper pocket perfect for storing a passport. Unlike a day bag or purse that can be snatched, keeping your passport on your body in a hidden spot is one of the safest options.

Sometimes the simplest tools are the best. A money belt keeps your passport flat against your waist, under your clothes. It’s virtually invisible, making it much harder for pickpockets to access. This is especially handy in crowded markets, train stations, or tourist hotspots where theft is most common. Make sure you buy one that has RFID blocking protection like the one I've linked HERE.

Your passport contains an RFID chip with your personal data. While rare, there are scanners that can skim this information without ever touching your passport. That’s why I always slip an RFID-blocking card right into the pocket with my passport (like in those hidden pants pockets). It’s lightweight, slim, and adds an extra layer of digital protection.

Bonus Safety Habits

Even with the best products, I always recommend a few simple backup steps:

  • Keep a password-protected digital copy of your passport on your phone.

  • Email a scanned copy to yourself so you can access it from anywhere.

  • Save your embassy’s phone number in your contacts before you go.

Bottom line: You may not always have a choice about carrying your passport, but you can control how safe it is. These products—and a few smart habits—make all the difference between worrying about your documents and enjoying your trip.
