Picture this: You've just landed at your destination after a long, arduous flight filled with delays, long customer service lines, etc. After hours and hours of delays you are rerouted through another connection in order to get to your final destination. All along the way you are assured that your baggage will make it there on time, if not before you. But as you use their airlines app to track your bag only to realize that your luggage has decided to take an impromptu vacation and stay halfway across the country. This was precisely the scenario I found myself in recently, courtesy of none other than American Airlines.
As soon as I realized what had happened I started a chat with customer service. I needed to hit the ground running once I made it to my final destination, I was arriving 8 hours after my intended arrival time. Customer service could in fact verify that my bag was left behind in Dallas, but they could not work on getting it sent to my final destination until AFTER I made it to my final destination. Frustration was definitely setting in by this point as I was hoping to get a jump start on getting my luggage to the right location.
Thankfully I know my rights, and I know what I’m entitled to and I know how to advocate for myself. Knowing my baggage wasn’t going to make it to my final destination in time despite my best efforts I started in on solving my own problem. Keep in mind it’s been YEARS since I’ve had a baggage issue, so I’ve gotten out of the habit of lugging all the spare stuff in my carry on “just in case”. Much to my mother’s dismay (as I got an earful from her about not being more prepared), I didn’t have anything I needed until I could be reunited with my bag. Thankfully my mother did raise a great problem solver and I found a fairly easy work around.
Now, anyone who's ever had the misfortune of dealing with lost luggage knows that sinking feeling all too well. But fear not, fellow travelers, for there is a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos: the rules and regulations set forth by the government for baggage reimbursement. Enter flightrights.gov, your beacon of light in the murky waters of airline mishaps.
Flightrights.gov is the holy grail of air travel mishaps, a treasure trove of information on passenger rights and remedies in the event of delays, cancellations, and yes, lost luggage. It's the kind of website you never knew you needed until disaster strikes, and suddenly you find yourself poring over its pages like a detective on the case.
It’s not the most interesting website to read, so I’ll just give you the details…I knew I was entitled to up to $3,800 worth of reimbursed expenses for reasonable and necessary items that I needed to purchase while I was separated from my bag.
So while I was waiting at my final connection I jumped on Target’s website and submitted a pickup order with the items I needed. I then went to Ulta’s website and did a pickup order for my makeup so I didn’t scare people with my unruly makeup free face. My original flight was supposed to get in late on a Friday night, and I was now not only adding another leg onto my flight journey, but I was arriving Saturday at 8:00am, roughly 9 hours after I was set to arrive. After spending many hours in the airport and on the plane, I needed a serious refresh. My orders included underwear, workout clothes, a dress for my event that evening in case my luggage didn’t arrive by then, hair staying tools and products, makeup, deodorant and other toiletries, etc.
When I arrived at my final destination and again verifying on American Airlines app that my bag was still in Dallas, I went to the customer service department in the baggage area to file my official report. Making sure I was kind and courteous to the woman helping me, which is always the right thing to do, I approached the desk. The agent gave me a sympathetic smile, clearly well-versed in the art of placating disgruntled passengers. "I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience, ma'am," she said, her tone oozing with practiced sincerity. "But rest assured, we'll do everything in our power to reunite you with your belongings as soon as possible."
We submitted my claim and she was able to let me know that they were already to put my bag on the next flight which would arrive around 2pm. I asked her what the process was for reimbursement of items I would need to purchase as a result of my delayed baggage, and she not only seemed surprised, but definitely wasn’t interested in dishing out any information.
The agent's smile faltered ever so slightly, a sure sign that she was about to launch into the scripted spiel about airline liability and the limitations thereof. I told her I knew there would be some expenses and that I just needed to know the process to have the airline reimburse me. It was as if she knew I knew more than the average traveler, yet she still didn’t want to dish out any information. She offered me a small bag of toiletries, which really wasn’t much of anything I could use, but clearly an attempt to ward me off. I thanked her and asked again how I make a claim. She quickly stated I needed to take it up with the airline and referred me to a website.
To her credit, I’m certain the airlines make sure their employees don’t just willingly give out the customers rights. But I sure am grateful I know them.
And so, armed with my knowledge, I went on my way and picked up my online orders. And thanks to the magic of online ordering, I had everything I needed waiting for me, making the inconvenience of my lost luggage a mere blip on the radar of life.
In the end, I emerged unscathed with only the small inconvenience of having to pickup my orders and return to the airport later to pickup my bag. So the next time you find yourself stranded sans luggage, remember: knowledge is power, and a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Remember to keep CHASING MEMORIES!
